Spirit Warrior

Original Size

The painting “Spirit Warrior” depicts a late-19th-century Kiowa war bonnet, a ceremonial headdress earned through acts of bravery, leadership, and service. Each eagle feather represents an honor recognized within the community, making the bonnet both a sacred object and a record of lived responsibility.
Eagle feathers hold deep spiritual importance, believed to carry prayers and to connect the wearer to the sky, the natural world, and the Creator. A faintly emerging warrior’s face appears within the composition as an expression of spiritual significance of the plains warrior.
The war bonnet stands as both historical witness and cultural testament—an emblem of Kiowa leadership, spiritual responsibility, and resilience during a pivotal era in Plains history, and a reminder of the continuing legacy of Native peoples within the story of the American West.
